Over 100 Years And Still Going Strong

Owl Pharmacy is the oldest business on the Centerville Square and has been located on the East side since 1893. The business was founded by R. A. McKee and was originally part of the
Continental Hotel.

Twenty five years and four owners later, local pharmacist James Shanks purchased the business in 1918. Two years later Mr. Shanks was joined by his new partner, Elton Hendershot. Their partnership lasted 44 years. In 1920 Mr. Shanks and Mr. Hendershot were joined by another partner, Glen Shanahan. In 1964 the three partners sold the business to Rollie Reznicek. Rollie owned and operated the Owl until selling the business, in January of 1992, to his son Frank Reznicek. Frank graduated from Creighton University in 1981 as a pharmacist.

In 1946 Dean W. Green started working at Owl Pharmacy as a "soda jerk." Dean was influenced by his employers so much that he became a pharmacist. After Dean served in the military and working as a pharmacist in Des Moines, IA, he joined the staff as a full time pharmacist in 1959. Dean has since retired and now lives in Des Moines, IA.

Over the years, Owl Pharmacy has experienced many changes and has been remodeled several times yet the address remains the same. In 1935 a new front and soda fountain were installed. For many years the soda fountain was the gathering spot for area residents. The sodas and ice cream were very popular treats, especially with the teenagers who considered the snacks as "food."

In 1964 the soda fountain was removed. Then in 1978 a major remodeling project nearly doubled the size of the drugstore and transformed the store front as you see it today.

Even today, the store continues to undergo changes including the expansion of the bookkeeping department and the installation of computerized cash registers which include product bar scanning for faster and more accurate checkout.

For over 100 years Owl Pharmacy and it's staff have been committed to serving the Centerville area with quality service and products. With a long tradition of being a part of the business community, Owl Pharmacy will easily provide another 100 years of service.
